How to fit self-care and brain healthy activities into your busy life
May 18, 2023You’re busy - as in very busy...
... taking conference calls in the car while dropping the kids off at practice.
... working through lunch so you can get done with just one more thing before rushing off to your next meeting.
... constantly trying to squeeze every ounce of productivity out of your day as you can.
And you're wondering how in the world you're supposed to make time to take care of your health and wellbeing on top of everything else - so, despite your best intentions, self-care falls to the back burner, slipping further down the list of priorities, until you're stressed and eventually feeling burned out.
It doesn't have to be this way.
We know that we perform better and feel better when we are taking care of our physical and mental health. In fact, prioritizing our health and wellbeing (mental, physical, and emotional) can positively improve not only our mood, stress level, and physical health, but can also positively impact the health of our brain and relationships, even improving our productivity.
So, how do we prioritize our wellbeing while also trying to do all of the things? We get intentional and smart about our approach.
I’m here to tell you that:
… living a brain healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be daunting.
… simple shifts in daily habits can lead to big changes over time.
… many of the same tips to promote a healthy brain also help improve mood, physical health, and wellbeing.
Intrigued?
By taking small steps each day to be even 1% healthier than the day before, we can make huge strides over time in terms of improving our health and wellbeing.
What does that look like for you? Maybe it's:
... taking 10 minutes out of your day for a walk at lunch time - helping you destress and get your blood pumping during the workday.
... blocking 10 minutes on your calendar between meetings so you can do a quick meditation or some relaxing breathing.
... calling a friend on your drive home.
... learning something new by watching a TED talk before bed instead of doom scrolling or checking email (again).
... running around the backyard with the kids and the dog instead of watching TV.
These are just a few small steps that you can take today to help improve your mental health and wellbeing, while also promoting a brain healthy lifestyle that is physically, cognitively, and socially active - engaged in activities that you enjoy and find meaningful.
What will you do today to fit self-care and brain healthy activities into your busy life?
